Ohayo is the Japanese word for "Good
morning." The poems in this book follow the traditional form, but spring out of the Ohio heartlands. Whether read as a morning greeting or at some other time of day, they are meant to inspire and soothe like a greeting from an old friend.
Orfin and Borthid have just completed their long journey from Earth to Galcon, a planet balanced between two suns. They are met by the ambassador who has been assigned to the planetary outpost. The two are "Discontinueds," which means that they belong to a class of people rendered sterile by a virus which has ravaged Earth. Through a lottery set up by the Planetary Council, they have been chosen "Citizen Explorers," and begin a new life on Galcon.

When an asteroid strike in Antarctica throws the earth into volcanic winter, a small group of sailors seeks refuge away from the forces of destruction. Survival depends on their leaving behind the technologies of the twenty-first century and reconnecting with the rhythms of nature. Surrounded by calamity, these families discover the strength of community that is based on values that extend beyond kinship.
Take a fascinating look inside the old Ohio Penitentiary as you follow a group of inmates who meet weekly under the tutelage of a lifer named Zeno in a group called the Epictetus Club. The inmates study the teachings of this Greek philosopher, and with the help of his ancient wisdom they meet the daily challenges of their lives. Learning to think outside the limits of their own literal walls as they struggle to redeem themselves, the club members show us how to think beyond our own self-imposed limitations and comfort zones.
