I am SEDNA,
born by the Arctic seas,
mother of all warm-blooded sea animals.
A thousand children surround me.
Do not cry for me!
I am a goddess.
I am strong.
I will live Forever.
THIS IS MY STORY.

Sedna is a beautiful Inuit girl who angers her uncle when she refuses to marry any of the local suitors. She is punished by her father and is abandoned on an island with Sattu, her loyal dog, whom she loves. Sattu is drowned by her jealous uncle. When her father leaves to hunt caribou, Sedna is lured from her home by a powerful Spirit Bird transformed as a handsome hunter. Sedna sees too late that he is not human and is lonely and unhappy. After a year, her father arrives in his kayak to rescue her, but the Spirit Bird so terrifies him that, to save himself, he cuts her hands and throws her into the icy waters. But it is not Sedna's destiny to die. She becomes immortal, and from her blood and bones are born the life-giving mammals of the sea.
Sedna-Goddess of the Sea merges two traditional versions of this popular Northern creation myth. The primitive symbolism of the cut paper illustrations teach much about this ancient Inuit people and the spiritual world that formed their cultural beliefs.
